South Tyneside April 2016 Meeting Report
« on: May 08, 2016, 05:21:49 PM »
The South Tyneside Branch met as usual at 1.30 pm on Wednesday 20th April when the speaker was our own Ann Franklin.  Ann talked to the members and guests at the meeting about the search for links (Family rumor) between her ancestor William Henry Hurlbutt, who came from America to Shields, and his association with a similar named early settler who helped build Fort Saybrook, was involved with the Pequot Indian War of 1637, and who settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut.

She described her research in some detail, giving various helpful hints and comments along the way, and regaling us with some funny tales of incidents during her research in America, including the variations in 'pronunciation' of the name (Two countries separated by the same language!).

Ann was joined by visitors from the 'extended family' and as the afternoon progressed, comments passed between them of previously unknown and long forgotten items of information which were remembered and noted for further investigation.  The tale is still on-going as the final link between the two ends of the 'family' is still to be found.  In all an enthralling tale.  We await the further outcome.
